My research is centered on the use of metagenomics to shed light on the ecology of microbial communities. Primarily, I am interested in topics such as antibiotic resistance, pathogen ecology, the mobility of genes and microbes, ecosystem perturbations and recovery and microbial taxonomy. I have also been part of the development of several bioinformatics tools, including the widely used ITSx and Metaxa software, and I also have a strong interest in maintaining and improving accuracy and reliability of sequence databases.
