Doctoral student: Bioinformatics and artificial intelligence applied to antibiotic resistance

Application deadline: June 7 (Ref 2024-0242)

I will be co-supervising a four-year PhD project on antibiotic resistance and AI, financed by the SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) with Erik Kristiansson as the main supervisor. The position is interdisciplinary and combines mathematics and computer science with applications in biology in medicine. As mentioned, the PhD position will be supervised by Professor Erik Kristiansson and be located to the Dept. of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers. In addition, the position will be co-supervised by Professor Joakim Larsson at the Department of Infectious Diseases, University of Gothenburg, Dr. Anna Johnning, Fraunhofer-Chalmers Centre, and Johan Bengtsson-Palme, Chalmers University of Technology. The research project is centered around DNA sequence analysis, inference in biological networks, and modeling of evolution. The primary applications will be related to antibiotic resistance and bacterial genomics.

The candidate is expected to have a degree in bioinformatics, mathematical statistics, mathematics, computer science, physics, molecular biology, or any equivalent topic. Previous experience in analysis of large-scale biological data is desirable. It is important to have good computing and programming skills (e.g. in Python and R), experience with the Linux/UNIX computer environment, and, to the extent possible, previous experience in working with machine learning and/or artificial intelligence. The student will be part of the DDLS research school which is now being launched.

Master/Internship students

If you are a talented master student looking for a thesis project or an internship and think that you would be a good fit for the lab’s research themes, please send your CV and a short description of yourself to Johan Bengtsson-Palme (firstname.lastname@microbiology.se). We currently have some limitations on non-Chalmers students, but reach out and we will see what we can arrange.

If you are an international student, we essentially require the exchange to be done through one of the established channels (e.g. ERASMUS), as it otherwise is a big hassle setting the project up. We do, unfortunately, not have resources to support visiting students, so you would have to come with your own funding for living costs etc.

We will usually ask you to tell us in advance about your interests to find a suitable project, but when we have more specific open master thesis projects, they will be posted here:
